Week of October 6-10

Happy Thanksgiving!  I hope all are enjoying their holiday weekend!  Don't forget that tomorrow, October 14 is our field trip to the pumpkin patch.  Rain is predicted but I am hearing not until the late afternoon.  Please be sure your child is prepared just in case.  Rain boots and a jacket would be great!
Here are some pics of this past week's fun:

Here are some materials we put in our water table and turned it into a cutting centre.  Students were encouraged to note the differences in materials and the ability to cut them.  They discovered that the laminating film was easy to cut while the cardboard was the hardest to cut.
Precise cutting NOT at the cutting centre!

We used small pumpkins to re-enact Five Little Pumpkins Sitting on a Gate.  We had the pumpkins but needed the gate.  Friends used materials from around the room to create their own gate.  They also used a battery operated candle and turned it off when, "ooh went the wind, and out went the lights".

Using materials from nature at the art centre

Students are really into leaves . . . still!

Creating Outfits Out of Found Materials

Some students went on word searches in the room.  They were looking for colour words.   Once they found words like: yellow, red, or blue, written somewhere in the room, they copied the letters onto their paper.

Fun at the carpet . . .

Identity Day was a great way to end a wonderful week and to kick off our long holiday weekend.  Thank you for the amazing identity day objects and projects. We learned a lot about each other!

Week of September 29-October 4

Crazy Hair Day Fun!

Sorting by colour but choosing to use different coloured bowls - tricky!!
Ms. Romero read this cute story.
Mrs. McTats collected cats.  She had twenty six - one for every letter in the alphabet, named with the letters A-Z.  In this story, students were exposed to lots of math and language.  Lukas quickly recognized that Mrs. McTats was naming them in alphabetical order.  Students were also invited to use the abacus to keep track of how many cats Mrs. McTats had.
Ms. Romero brought in some additions to our dress up centre.  It was a huge hit!

King Triton just like his brother!

He discovered three ways to make three different sounds with the same basket.
Brothers making some great music together!
Letters were hidden beneath packing peanuts and students were challenged to find them all and put them back into their spots on a puzzle board.  They quickly worked together and got the job done.  To make it more tricky, I added numbers mixed in with the letters.  It only slowed them down a bit!

Shiny happy faces make our classroom a shiny happy place!
Artful creations!

Captain America was very popular in our room this week.

We played a matching game, matching the domino card to the numeral/word card.

More fun . . .
Using sand to write our names.
A great idea is the inspiration for others.
We used stickers and ten frames to create number displays.
Experimenting with objects both opaque and translucent at the light table.
Students helped cut the laminating film and discovered it cut much differently than paper.
Painting using fall colours.
Multi-tasking because there was so much to do!  He is wearing a dress-up vest, carrying a guitar and gathering materials for a Captain America shield.
Students have been unscrambling letters to the word of the day.  First they use the picture clue to figure out which word it is, then they listen for the beginning and ending sound and put those letters into place.  Finally, we fill in the middle sounds.  Many students decided they wanted to try and draw the picture and write the word, "pumpkin" in this picture.
